Cascade Companion Care

At Cascade Companion Care, we are thankful for you and for the trust that you have put in us to provide care for you or your loved one.  While this is the week of Thanksgiving, stopping to count our blessings isn’t only a seasonal event. Gratitude is good medicine year round. Here are some blessings that seem to belong especially to those in the second half of life:

Cornucopia for Thanksgiving

T – Technology. When one ponders how much life has changed in the last 50 years, it is staggering! Seniors have had a front row seat to some of the most amazing advances, especially in technology. It may be frustrating to keep up with changes, but your life is probably richer, healthier, and in many ways easier because of new technology. (Now if we can just figure out that blasted TV remote!)

H – History. While technology may always be pushing into new frontiers, seniors have something precious: history. It is a privilege to be able to remember how our parents’ parents came to this country . . . how we got an education . . . started a family . . . made contributions to our community . . . built deep personal connections. Nothing can make you grateful for your own history like cracking open an old photo album and seeing the places and persons who shaped you, whispering a “Thank you”.

A – Acceptance. As the Serenity Prayer says, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Very few people reach old age without experiencing adverse circumstances they could not change. Many of our clients have inspired us by sharing how their losses, struggles, and disappointments led to wisdom and acceptance about life’s meaning and purpose.

N – Nobility. Tom Brokaw wrote a book called The Greatest Generation. It chronicles many of the achievements of our seniors’ generation, and the nobility of their service and sacrifice. We see this dignity and nobility in our clients; it is a hallmark of a life well lived.

K – Knowledge. Our caregivers take great pleasure in learning from the seniors they care for. Whether it is flying a B-17, operating a HAM radio, pioneering metallurgy advances, helping veterans with the first generation of prosthetics, designing cities, raising resilient families or keeping a marriage alive over decades, our clients have much knowledge to share; it is a rich blessing they can pass on to others.

S – Senior Discounts are fantastic! Wherever you go, ask if there is a senior discount.  You’ve earned it!

G – Grandchildren! As every grandparent will tell you, their grandchildren are the most precious persons on the planet! Truly, they are among life’s greatest blessings!

I – Investments. Seniors are in the reaping stage of life. They have sown seeds with money, time, talents, and relationships. What a gift it is to be alive to see the fruit of one’s labors!

V – Vim and Vigor. Vim and Vigor are the more congenial cousins of Aches and Pains. Many seniors could list their aches and pains but choose instead to focus on the areas of vim and vigor that remain strong. Having this positive perspective on life is a great blessing.

I – Interests. You worked hard all your life. You often sacrificed your own interests due to the demands of work and family. Now you have the opportunity to explore interests and hobbies that you’ve always wanted to delve into. Maybe you and your Cascade Companion Care caregiver can make a trip to the library to get you started!

N – Northwest. Whether you grew up here, moved here, or retired here, you’re here! What a wonderful place to be! Rivers, lakes, mountains, islands! Rural landscapes, exciting cities, thriving ecosystems! It’s a blessing to live in the Northwest and to have the leisure of retirement to soak in its beauty.

G – God. Seniors have lived long enough to have had many occasions to ponder what life is all about. Why am I here? What is my purpose? These questions lead many to discover the goodness of God and embark on a journey of faith. Ultimately, God is the ground of all our thanksgiving!

These are just a few reflections on the many reasons we have to be thankful.  Your list will be as unique as you are, and as long as your life experience.  All of us at Cascade Companion Care wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving as we celebrate together the wonderful gift of life.
